What is compounding? Before mass production of medications became the norm, compounding was a routine activity among pharmacists. The art of compounding can be traced to biblical times (Exodus 30:25 KJV). Ancient compounders discovered the first oils from plants and animals. They made ointments for wounded patients, discovered poisons and antidotes, and even compounded perfumes for customers. While times and technologies have changed, much of what the compounder does is still the same as it was then.
Professional compounding is not just diluting existing medications, or mixing powders with bases. Consideration must be given to physical and chemical properties of each active and inactive ingredient in order to prepare an effective and safe customized medication with the desired taste, color, fragrance, viscosity, uniformity, texture, and stability. The efficiency of any compounded medication is influenced by the technique and equipment used in formulation preparation, the purity and quality of the ingredients, choice of vehicle (base), and proper use of additives (i.e. penetration enhancers).
In summary, compounding is a timeless art combined with the latest medical knowledge and state-of art technology. It is the scientific creation of custom-tailored medication specific to each individual or pet’s needs. These formulations are based on the relationship between a patient, his doctor, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant, and the pharmacist.

Millions of women, from every age and background, experience some form of hormone-related health condition during their lifetimes. You may have noticed you don't have the stamina, sex drive, motivation or strength you did 10 years ago. Is this a normal part of aging? Yes. Can it be improved? Yes again. Men undergo a much more gradual decline when it comes to honnone changes. Women hit menopause around age 51 with a period of about 10 years leading up to that with changing hormone levels. Men experience a decline in honnones starting around age 30. Since there is not anyone event or outright symptom (like hot flashes) that signal this decline, symptoms in men often go undetected or ignored.
This has changed in the past several years with men taking more control of their health and seeking the same hormone balance help that women have enjoyed for decades. While testosterone decline is the most imp0l1ant factor in andropause many of the symptoms (fatigue, depression, low sex drive, loss of muscle mass) can be caused by lifestyle or medications. Talk to one of our team members today about how we can help you feel better.
Central Drug works together with pediatricians, family practitioners, and their children to customize pediatric medications to meet specific needs. Children present many challenges when it comes to medicines; most medicines are not labeled for pediatric populations. This is usually because it is not available in a suitable pediatric dosage form. Children also may resist taking a medicine, dislike the taste or texture, have difficulty swallowing solid dosage forms, or are fearful of injections or suppositories.
Central Drug can help. Our trained staff can compound oral medications into pleasantly flavored suspensions, solutions lollipops, freezer pops, “gummy bears”, or lozenges. Different colors may also be used to entice the child to take the medications. Some drugs can be compounded into transdermal gels that can be gently applied to an appropriate site, such as the child’s wrist, for absorption through the skin (e.g. Phenergan for nausea). Alternative dosing forms can improve compliance and minimize spillage or waste. Greater compliance leads to improved outcomes.
A few of the pediatric challenges Central Drug can help solve: acne, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism, diaper rash, Fungal Infections, head lice, Scabies, Molluscum Contagiosum, nausea & vomiting, and topical anesthesia.
